Audition Music
ALL STUDENTS ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO AUDITION! This is a highly educational experience. Students receive 50 MP points just for auditioning, and receive 100 if they audition and are selected. There are more points available for top band and top chair, as well as getting recommending and making the all-state bands.
Every student auditioning has TWO excerpts to prepare (with the exception of the mallet and snare students, they are in one document.) Both need to be performed for the audition to count. Excerpts will be available on SmartMusic sometime in September to help with practicing. Mrs. B is happy to help before or after school, as well as during EDGE time (after school needs to be Wednesdays due to marching band rehearsals.)
All auditioners are required to perform 2 scales off the scale sheet. You won't know which until you are in the audition room, and each student will be asked different scales at random. PREPARE ALL SCALES!!!!! They do not have to be memorized. Make sure you play them how they are on THIS scale sheet EXACTLY.
DO NOT WAIT until November to start preparing! This music is meant to be tough and thus takes time to prepare. START NOW!!! You cannot over practice!!!
You don't know if you'll make it unless you audition. Most all of our students are highly capable of making the ensembles.
Note: not all excerpts are available at this time. I just got the list this week and there are a few books that haven't come in yet. I am in the process of getting them and will post the excerpts as soon as I have them.
Percussion - If auditioning on Snare, prepare the Snare Primary, and Snare Secondary. If auditioning on Mallets, prepare the Mallet Primary, and the Mallet Secondary. The secondary excerpts will show the judges your ability on other instruments. Both are important to getting in. If you audition on timpani, you only have to prepare the ONE timpani excerpt. Percussionists do NOT have to prepare scales.
